A major political player in Michigan revealed this week that he had big plans for Election Day...including attempting to block those who recently lost their homes from voting.
The plan was to place “Election Challengers” at the polls with lists of foreclosed-upon properties and instructions to challenge the right to vote of those who live there.
Talk about kicking people while they're down -- these folks have lost their homes and now political operatives want to take away their votes? These challenges are almost certainly illegal (and obviously shameful). But, even if unsuccessful, the strategy could create long lines and delays that prevent hundreds or possibly thousands of other registered voters from participating.
This party operative has since denied these plans, but it doesn't really matter. Because we know that this is exactly the kind of thing that happens every election year. And if it happens in Michigan, it will certainly happen in other states.
We're fighting back, and you can help us. Write the Secretary of State of Michigan, Terri Lynne Land, and tell her that this kind of interference with the basic right to vote is unacceptable, and that you expect her to say so--publicly.
