As a progressive with a soft spot for environmental issues, I was thrilled to help replace the worst environmental president in history with Barack Obama, who promises a fundamental shift in direction. But I squirmed in my chair when watching President-elect Obama's speeches praising clean coal as an alternative energy source. Because coal is neither clean nor safe, as yesterday's 500 million gallon spill of toxic coal ash in Tennessee painfully illustrates.
