Food Politics Spoil Summer Reading

WSU has been engaging its students in critical thinking in recent years through a summer reading program which provides thought provoking reading for incoming freshmen. This year, however, it seems politics is trumping higher learning.

The book that was chosen for this year's incoming freshman class is Micheal Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma. The book does not paint a pretty picture of modern agribusiness -- not surprising considering the considerable damage agribusiness does to our environment.

Harold Cochran, member of the Board of Regents, disagrees with Pollan's assessment of agribusiness, which is not surprising considering that Cochran owns a 5,500 acre farm and is a member of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers.

Tell WSU President Elson Floyd to put Ominivore's Dilemma back on the summer reading list for incoming freshmen.
